President Donald Trump addressed the nation Saturday night after Iran's state media confirmed what Israeli and American intelligence had reported hours earlier: Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran for 36 years, is dead.

"The people that make all the decisions, most of them are gone. The world is safer tonight."- President Donald Trump, February 28, 2026

Trump called Khamenei "evil" and described Operation Epic Fury as "the most successful military operation in decades." He made clear the strikes would continue until Iran's military capabilities and nuclear program were fully neutralized.

The Statement

Speaking from the White House, Trump outlined three objectives for the ongoing operation:

1. Eliminate Iran's nuclear threat. Strikes targeted enrichment facilities at Natanz and Fordow, the heavy water reactor at Arak, and research facilities across the country. Trump said Iran would "never" build a nuclear weapon.

2. Destroy military command infrastructure. The IRGC's command centers, air defense systems, and missile facilities were hit in the first wave. Israel confirmed killing "several" of 30 key Iranian leaders targeted.

3. Decapitate regime leadership. Khamenei's compound was hit deliberately. Five to ten other senior officials who were meeting with him were also killed, according to a senior US defense official.

Political Reaction

The response split along predictable lines. Republican leaders praised the operation. Senate Democrats demanded an emergency congressional briefing, with several questioning the legal authority for the strikes.

Senator Lindsey Graham called it "the most decisive action against state-sponsored terrorism in American history." Senator Bernie Sanders called it "an illegal act of war that Congress never authorized."

Netanyahu's Response

"We said never again. We meant it."- Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Netanyahu confirmed Israel's role in the operation and said the campaign would continue. He described it as a direct response to decades of Iranian-funded terrorism, including support for Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis.

What Continues

Despite Khamenei's death, the military operation is not over. Trump indicated strikes would persist until Iran's missile program, nuclear facilities, and remaining military infrastructure were neutralized. A woman was killed by an Iranian retaliatory missile in Tel Aviv, and Iran continued launching barrages at Israeli cities.

The question now shifts from whether Khamenei is dead to what comes after. With the Supreme Leader gone, several top IRGC commanders killed, and the nuclear program under sustained bombardment, Iran faces a succession crisis with no clear path forward.

Trump's message was clear: the operation ends when he decides it ends.
