ZCASH NFT RUSH: $36.9M BLIND AUCTION CLEARS ON A CHAIN WITH NO SMART CONTRACTS, THREE WHITELISTS STILL OPEN BEFORE MONDAY
In under a week a privacy coin with no contract layer became the loudest NFT venue in crypto. zkSNARKs cleared 8,000 shielded identities at 1.5 ZEC apiece on nearly 17,000 sealed bids. The next wave mints Monday, and three of the most-watched collections are still taking whitelist applications.
Zcash has no smart contracts. No ERC-721, no Seaport, no OpenSea. Until this month that made it the last chain anyone expected an NFT cycle to land on. Then zkSNARKs, a 10,000-piece collection of 26 by 26 pixel "shielded identities," ran a 48-hour uniform-price blind auction that closed September 17 at 12:00 ET. It cleared at 1.5 ZEC per identity, pulled 16,971 bids, and moved 25,305 ZEC. At the dollar figures reported alongside the sale, roughly $36.9 million, that implies a ZEC price near $1,460.
Bids were submitted through shielded transactions, so nobody could see anyone else's number. Cross-chain participants bid in ETH, SOL or stablecoins and settled in ZEC through NEAR Intents. Secondary trading opened on Zilkroad with a 5 percent royalty deducted from seller proceeds and no marketplace fee.
The money is real. The infrastructure underneath it is improvised. Both facts matter for what mints next.
The Auction That Lit The Fuse
Of the 10,000 zkSNARKs, 8,000 went to the public auction, 1,000 to early Snarklist members and 1,000 to a treasury for grants, artists, contributors and the team. Everyone who cleared paid the same 1.5 ZEC regardless of what they bid, the standard uniform-price design. The 25,305 ZEC of volume is the largest single NFT sale in Zcash history by a margin so wide there is no meaningful second place.
It did not happen in isolation. Zec Punks, 1,555 pixel punks, minted September 15 at 0.015 ZEC and sold out. ZecBit, 3,333 pixel PFPs and one of the first collections on the chain, free-minted to completion on the Zcash Shielded Assets testnet. Zecutives, 1,111 executive avatars, is minting live on ZEC Market against its own $EXZEC token. Bitfoots is selling 303 hand-made 1/1 creatures at roughly $5 in ZEC. A September 18 KuCoin roundup listed more than ten active or announced collections.
How An NFT Exists On A Chain With No Contracts
There are three different answers, and buyers should know which one they are holding.
The first is ZORD, an ordinals-style metaprotocol from Zatoshi Labs that serial-numbers individual zatoshis and inscribes data into OP_RETURN outputs on transparent transactions. Payloads are capped at 80 bytes, so the standards (ZRC-20 for fungibles, ZRC-721 for NFTs, ZNS for .zec names) are short JSON envelopes pointing at IPFS. It is fully public. Zordinals.fun runs a launchpad and marketplace on top of it.
The second is what the current boom actually runs on: registries keyed to shielded addresses with an off-chain index. Zilkroad describes itself as "a non-custodial index and coordination layer for zkSNARKs on Zcash." Login means giving the site your shielded address and entering a code it sends you inside a transaction memo. Ownership is real in the sense that a z-address holds it. The NFT itself is defined by the indexer, not by consensus.
The third is Zcash Shielded Assets, native user-issued tokens inside the Orchard pool, NFTs included. That ships in Network Upgrade 7, whose first testnet is already live and whose mainnet activation is targeted for November 5. NU7 also cuts block time from 75 seconds to 25 and roughly doubles shielded throughput. When it lands, private NFTs stop being a convention and become a protocol feature.
Three Whitelists Still Open
Every mint in this wave requires a unified shielded address, the u1 format. Transparent t-addresses do not qualify. Noir and Zodl are the wallets the projects themselves name.

ZADDR is the one with a clock on it. 2,800 hand-drawn "shielded faces," an announcement tweet past 1.5 million views, and a mint on September 21: whitelist phase at 13:00 UTC, one per wallet, then public at 19:00 UTC, up to three per wallet, at 0.02 ZEC each. Whitelist is a manual application and as of September 18 applicants were still waiting on decisions.
Cypher Squad is 6,000 32 by 32 pixel identities across four classes (Ghost, Operator, Architect, Phantom) with 1/1 legendaries, and a free mint. Whitelist steps are posted on cyphersquad.cc: follow @CypherSquadZEC, like and quote the pinned post, submit a u1 address. There is a second route, an arcade game on the site where surviving 25 gates unlocks the whitelist and the top ten on the leaderboard get extras. No mint date or price has been published.
ZecCat is 3,333 cats with the whitelist open and date and price still TBA. What separates it from the other pixel collections is the roadmap: the team says it is building its own marketplace with collection browsing, portfolio management, listings, purchase requests and item offers. On a chain where Zilkroad is currently the only serious secondary venue, that is the pitch.
None of the three publish team identities on their sites.

Zec Frogs is not a whitelist play. The 6,969-piece free mint is gated by wallet instead: only Noir wallet u1 shielded addresses are eligible. Zec Marton, 555 puppets, is a free mint marked "launching soon" with no time posted.
The open question nobody in the ecosystem has answered is migration. Every pre-NU7 collection defines its own registry. When Zcash Shielded Assets activate on November 5, those registries either get re-issued as native assets or stay what they are today, entries in a database that a website promises to honor. Holders paying 1.5 ZEC for an identity are betting on the first outcome. Volume is denominated in a coin trading near $1,460, so every dollar figure in this story moves with it. What does not move is the schedule: 13:00 UTC Monday, and the whitelist window before it.
